White elephant

This term refers to a property requiring much care and expense but giving little profit or resulting useless. The term derives from the story that the kings of Siam (now Thailand) used to make a present of one of these animals to subordinates who became dissatisfying, in order to ruin them by the cost of its maintenance. 

For example: “A lot of the stadiums built for the Olympics are now just white elephants.
