Mistake 17: It is important For/To me

After hearing both options many times, I’ve come across this explanation which I happily agree with:

[A subject] is important to [a living object].

Her hobbies are important to her.
Studying is important to me.

But important for is correct in this structure:

It is important for + [object] + [infinitive verb].

It is important for you to rest when you are sick.
It is important for plants to get enough water.
It is important for animals to exercise.

In general:
When something is important to someone, they feel it is important.
When something is important for someone, it is an independent fact, whether or not they have an opinion about it.
