Forever or for ever?

It seems that in American English the word ‘forever’ is the most common.

In British English both words are used with the sense that a particular situation will always exist. However, it seems that the expression we have in Spanish “por siempre jamás” is more commonly written separate as in ‘they lived happily for ever’.
