Hogmanay

In Scotland the name for New Year’s Eve is Hogmanay. After midnight people visit their friends and take a present for them: a piece of coal. Traditionally the first visitor of the year must carry coal into the house as it brings good luck (and also it helps to make a fire in the middle of winter). This is what is known as Hogmanay or “first footing”.
